Numerology is the study of numbers as meaningful constructs related to human consciousness. Numbers occupy our lives in many ways, starting with number values associated with the letters of words, especially our names.
We have the numbers for our birthday, month, and year. Most countries have a number sequence for citizens (in the United States, it is the 9-digit Social Security Number or SSN). Most of us have a phone number; if we drive a car, we have a number plate. Each word and sequence of numbers reduces to a number between 1 and 9, and each of those numbers has spiritual meaning.
This article will explore the number meanings for the year 2021.
Enter the 5 Year
Welcome, 2021 is a 5 year. The previous 5 year was 2012, and the one before that was 2003. Every number re-cycles every nine years. The number 5 is about change and catalyzing energy; each 5 year is about pivoting in some new and significant way.
In their book Numerology and the Divine Triangle, Faith Javane and Dusty Bunker describe the Destiny Number 5 as:
Many changes occur in your life, and your mission might well be to promote progress through a willingness to accept change. You are definitely not keyed to the old order or to outworn ideas and set principles. You are willing to adopt new concepts and new points of understanding, even to the extent of daring to claim the liberty to suggest new ways of doing things, and you have the ability to present the new in logical and acceptable terms.
You make steppingstones of changes and cleverly turn them into growth experiences. You do not, however, forget conventions since you are really not a rebel. Instead, you propose new ideas to promote enlightenment; you have the courage and willingness to let go of the old and experiment with the new. (34)
Clearly, the theme is change. It would be wonderful if progress was always positive, but advances in technology, distribution of goods and services, and increases sometimes lead to setbacks in other areas of life. What we can expect from a 5 year is a reshaping of the foundations established, disrupted, or persisting from the 4 year.
Tarot and the Number 5
There are six number 5 cards in the tarot. The Major Arcana has two, the Hierophant (the actual number 5 card) and Temperance (the number 14 card, which reduces to a 5). There is also a 5 in each suit: 5 of Cups, 5 of Pentacles, 5 of Swords, and 5 of Wands. These are not the easiest cards for each suit. The 5 of Cups represents disappointment; the 5 of Pentacles is material difficulty; the 5 of Swords is defeat, and the 5 of Wands is conflict.
As you might guess, we will need the wisdom and blessing of the Hierophant and the balance of Temperance to navigate the 5’s of each suit. The hardships that started in 2020 will play out in numerous, difficult ways with 2021.
The 5 and Astrology
There are many ways to look at 5 in astrology. The 5th sign is Leo and the 5th House rules children, creativity, and love affairs. The 5th planet from the Sun is Jupiter and the 5th planet in the sequence of points in astrology is Mars. Taken together this year will focus on how we find positive energy in the midst of so much change and difficulty. It will be a mixed bag since Jupiter is the greater benefic (of Venus and Jupiter) and Mars is the lesser malefic (of Mars and Saturn).
The ruler of Leo and the 5th House is the Sun, so hopefully, positive energy from the Sun and Jupiter will prevail over the course of this year.
The Months of the 5 Year
Each month I write an article for Ask Astrology connecting the month and year. Coinciding with this article is one about the numerology of January 2021; it provides an in-depth look at the first month of the year which is a 6.
01/2021 = 6
The beginning of the year is a 6. In this month we will all need to “express more love for others. 6 is the domestic vibration, and the presence of it indicates a need to deepen the ties of affection with those in your immediate family and environment. We should develop a personal sense of responsibility for those who depend on us, and a social sense of responsibility for the welfare of those in our communities” (Javane and Bunker, 89).
02/2021 = 7
The second month of the year is a 7. In this month we will all “need to develop our minds and our intuitive and philosophical side. We must abandon the material world on occasion and learn to go within ourselves, to meditate and ponder upon the substance of our being” (89).
03/2021 = 8
The third month of the year is an 8. In this month, we will all need to “channel our energies into the material world to attain a position of leadership. Develop our business sense. This number bestows strength and will” (89).
04/2021 = 9
The fourth month of the year is a 9. In this month, we will need to “become universalist, humanitarians, whose primary concern is for the welfare of others. We should develop breadth of thinking, and universal love for others” (89).
05/2021 = 10 = 1
The fifth month of the year is a 1. In this month, we “need to build in the qualities of leadership, courage, and daring. It is important to learn to make decisions and take control of any given situation which requires our effort” (88).
06/2021 = 11 = 2
The sixth month of the year is a 2. In this month, we “must learn the fine art of cooperation, tact, and diplomacy. Working in partnership with another requires giving on our part; learn to stay in the background when necessary. When we understand how another person thinks and feels, we can get in touch with our own emotions and feelings” (88).
07/2021 = 12 = 3
The seventh month of the year is a 3. In this month, we “need to learn to express ourselves. We need to develop our communicative talents by training ourselves in the art of speaking through acting, elocution, foreign languages, and so forth, so that we can be an influence in the lives of others” (88).
08/2021 = 13 = 4
The eighth month of the year is a 4. In this month, we “must develop an orderly, systematic lifestyle which produces a structured existence. We must translate our energies into tangible forms through hard work and discipline” (88).
09/2021 = 14 = 5
The ninth month of the year is a 5. In this month, we “need to learn to adjust to changes and to become more versatile. We must develop our freedom, physically, mentally, and spiritually so that the more adventurous side of our nature can express itself” (88).
10/2021= 15 = 6
We arrive again at the energy of the first of the year and the message is the same. In this month we will all need to “express more love for others. 6 is the domestic vibration, and the presence of it indicates a need to deepen the ties of affection with those in your immediate family and environment. We should develop a personal sense of responsibility for those who depend on us, and a social sense of responsibility for the welfare of those in our communities” (89)
11/2021 = 16 = 7
We arrive again at the energy of the second month and the message is the same. In this month we will all “need to develop our minds and our intuitive and philosophical side. We must abandon the material world on occasion and learn to go within ourselves, to meditate and ponder upon the substance of our being” (89).
12/2021 = 17 = 8
We arrive again at the energy of the third month and the message is the same. In this month, we will all need to “channel our energies into the material world to attain a position of leadership. Develop our business sense. This number bestows strength and will” (89).
