Self-Sabotage: A Legacy of Trauma from a Previous Life?
April 21, 2025 | Joëlle O'Toole
Past life trauma can deeply influence how we manifest our reality. Manifestation is the result of what we believe to be true on a deep level. Even when we do not actively try to manifest, our thoughts manifest all the time.
This article will help you understand past life wounds which may be holding you back in this life. Even if you don’t believe in past lives, meditation on them can be uplifting and healing.
What is past life trauma?
Many of us believe that we live many lives on the earth plane and sometimes in other dimensions too. Lives on earth can be very difficult and fraught with pain, loss, battles and hardships. Inevitably if we have lived on the earth before, we will have gone through some very traumatic experiences. The experience of a death in a previous life will often convey fears and phobias into our currently life.

For instance, somebody who has drowned in a past life may have a fear of water. Or somebody who died in a war may even have a birthmark in the same area of their body that they suffered a wound.
Past lives are a fascinating insight into our psyches and can reveal deep programming and fears that cause us to self-sabotage.
It’s much easier to access our past life memories than you may think. There are many meditations available on audio and video platforms online.
To choose a suitable meditation look for a voice and rhythm which suits your relaxation style. Once you have found a past life meditation which relaxes you, you can practice. I personally recommend Brian Weiss (past life regression therapist) whose voice I find very soothing.
Some people, when meditating, will have visions of other lives immediately, for others it will take a while.
Not everyone is immediately comfortable with guided meditations. Know that the worst thing that will happen is you will fall asleep. It’s often difficult to stay awake when you are very relaxed, and that’s fine.
You will experience what you are ready to experience. Deep relaxing sleep may be what you need the most. When you are ready to have some visualisations then you will and they will probably be fascinating!
Remember, when you are meditating, your conscious mind is still present and can always stop at any time. It’s possible you’ll visualise something that makes you feel emotional. You may even remember some difficult experiences, but you can wake up at any point. You can also rationalise and think about what you’re experiencing as *you* in the present day.
Through guided meditations, we can sometimes access memories linked to past life trauma, offering insight into the emotional patterns we carry today.
YOU are in control.
What if I don’t believe in reincarnation?
It’s fine if you don’t believe in past lives. None of us can be 100% certain, we can choose what to believe, we may have convincing experiences which help us to feel sure.

I believe belief is a choice. That, if choosing to believe or indulge, in a certain thought brings joy, then it’s worth it. Belief isn’t the same as forming opinions, it’s personal and private to you. We can change our beliefs every day if we wish. Most of us did so happily when we were children!
Faith is different to belief and some religions have faith in the existence of reincarnation. There may be varying perspectives on what reincarnation is and whether we come back as animals or in other dimensions.
It’s good to relax and just experience the mind without deciding what you believe. The best way to approach meditation is with a childlike curiosity.
You may benefit. You may have a magical experience. You may have an amazing sleep. Or maybe nothing will happen at all. There isn’t any risk in listening to a meditation.
When we undergo a past life regression, we often find that we re-visit the trauma of previous loss and tragedy. Viewing these traumas can help us to heal some of the fears that have been brought into our current lives.
Experiencing painful past life memories can be emotional. However, often these memories or visions may provide clues as to our blocks and patterns in our current lives. If you have lived with a phobia which appreciate irrational, a past life meditation may resolve this for you!
We may also remember some joyful experiences, and revisit talents and specialist knowledge that we didn’t realise we had. There are stories of people speaking unknown languages during regression and having expert abilities that are not present in their current life.
Viewing ourselves as talented and versatile souls can help us to have more faith in our abilities and greater potential in our current lives.
One of the most magical experiences is when we recognise loved ones in a past life. Relationships can be magically transformed when our old stories with soulmates are understood.
Often receiving and giving love is what we fear the most. We’ve all loved and lost and our souls remember this pain. It may feel like self-sabotage, but we’re just trying to survive as best we can.
Self Sabotage
Sometimes it feels like we are our own worst enemies. We may run away from a great love, jeopardise a fantastic possibility or procrastinate when under pressure. The fear we have our own success is not rare and it’s not uncommon. The number of people talking about imposter syndrome lately, shows this!
Instead of considering fear as self sabotage, it could be good to look upon it as our subconscious trying to protect us.
Our subconscious minds work at a basic level, helping us survive, governing our fight, flight, freeze responses, and creating triggers to protect us from repeating the same mistakes.
Whilst our subconscious minds play a wonderful role in try to protect us. Understanding these basic responses can help us to integrate these impulses with rationale.
The aversion to repeating what made us unsafe is past lives makes sense, but we no longer need that protection in this life. Becoming aware of how past life trauma has shaped our fears allows us to break free from unconscious cycles
By remembering our past lives we can learn some of the trigger points and fears that we have accumulated. Sometimes just knowing that we experienced something before helps us to no longer fear it happening to us in the future.
Fear as a future projection
Most fears and phobias have a basis in the past and the future. We fear what we have experienced before in our most traumatic past life experiences, because the memories exist as shadows.
These shadows are often considered to be premonitions, and so we live our lives with these fears projected as future possibilities.
By understanding the source of our fears we can learn that we have survived. We have been through what we fear the most and here we are. Fine, for the most part.
We need not fear a reoccurrence because we have developed skills in this area. Often we will live lives as diversely as possible, seeking to experience a variety of experiences. It’s unlikely we will encounter what we fear again, unless we fixate upon it so much, we manifest it.
We self sabotage because we fear the future. By understanding our past experiences we can welcome the future. We can realise that we have been multi skilled, lived in many cultures, and been man, woman, maybe even animal before.
YOU can accomplish anything you wish and if you fail, then you will learn even more about how to excel next time!
