Living Without Regret: A Spiritual Guide to a Fulfilled Life
May 12, 2025 | Joëlle O'Toole
There have been recent studies where people at the end of long lives are asked what their regrets have been. Mostly they have talked about working less and connecting with their loved ones and their hobbies more.
Approaching life from a spiritual perspective can help us to appreciate what matters most while we are younger. The aim to have no regrets and live life to the full is a wonderful one.
Here are some suggestions toward living a spiritually fulfilled life.

Finding Your Calling for a Life Without Regret
We’re often expected to make big life choices in our teens. We are asked to choose future careers, without having had the opportunity to discover ourselves. As a result, it’s easy to fall into work which doesn’t align with our higher purpose.
It’s never too late to do change direction though. One great way to align your career with your true nature is to meditate on what you loved to do as a child. Before we begin school and are taught what we should learn and think, we have natural inclinations.
Most children are naturally creative and have different ways of expressing this. Our early childhood games are a great gauge of our true nature and can guide us towards living without regret.
Keeping in touch with the creative part of ourselves is so valuable. For many, keeping our passions separate from work helps to retain more magic.
Connect with your favourite creative pastime. If you’ve stopped being artistic, maybe take it up again as a hobby. Or if your greatest love is animals, find ways to be involved with them again.

Your path is your unique. Connecting to this is so good for physical, spiritual and mental health and balance.
True Friendships and Living Without Regret
We meet many people throughout our lives. Some we stay in touch with, and some we don’t. Sometimes large friendship groups remain connected, even when they don’t serve our highest purpose or our goal of living without regret.
It is worth taking the time to reflect upon who your true soul family are? Who in your life accepts you as you are and celebrates your successes? Who do you feel you can relax around and share your deepest thoughts and quirks? There are always people with whom you laugh more or feel refreshed from spending time with.
Do your oldest friends feel this way?
Sometimes we may hold on to redundant friendship for duty, habit or guilt. Yet this doesn’t serve our development or our soul balance. Oftentimes people remain friends with people who drain them, or resent them.
Consider only checking in occasionally with those you no longer resonate with. Yet, prioritise the souls with whom you feel connected, safe, accepted, and appreciated. This is another way to ensure you are living without regret.

Of course, do always endeavour to bethe friend who lights up everybody else’s life. Like attracts like after all.
Being Free: A Key to Living Without Regret
There are so many cultural expectations! Have you come from a family with materialistic expectations, or have parents who project their failed dreams on to you?
The truth is when people have expectations of us, nothing will satiate them. Those who ‘love’ conditionally will never be satisfied, as they live in an energy deficient state. Your energy and compliancy is what they seek.
There is never any gain in living to please or appease others. The only way we can ever be fulfilled is by living our lives in the way that feels right to us.
Nobody can choose your spiritual journey and there may be people who are upset by your choices. However, those who truly love us will never try to stop us being our true selves.
Love is supportive, accepting and nurturing. Control, ultimatums and manipulation only ever come from conditional, fear-based relationships.
Attachment is part of the human condition but it is not part of our soul growth.
It is only by finding our inner truth and expression that we can be free. Being free allows us to love more fully, and live with more energy and expression.
What can you do to express your free spirited nature? Are there any parts of yourself that you have neglected to please others?
By being free you may lose those who wish to control you. This may hurt initially but you can never lose true connection or love. Anything but love is based in fear and ego anyway.
Curiosity
I often joke that I was raised by cats. I’m glad I was, they taught me how to be curious and to feel a genuine connection to nature.
Cats live in the moment and can be excited by a waft of wind, or a mysterious shadow. They have to sit as high as they can, so they can oversee as much as possible. Cats always seem to be on mission when you bump into them. They will stop for fuss if they have time or inclination, or they may not.
Curiosity is such a pure expression of the soul and it shows us how to be present in the moment. Only the moment exists and if we want to live fully, we need to be present and aware.
Thinking of the past or the future can be wasteful, if it is not constructive. Whenever we are in the present then we are connected to everything and everyone.
Animals can teach us how to be present and how to be enthusiastic. Dogs can teach us how to find joy in the smallest, simple pleasure.
Healthy children are naturally curious too, it is the natural, joyful state of being.
Learning is how we evolve into better people. Never stop learning or wanting to understand. This is how to stay young at heart and how to live without regret.
How Health Supports a Life Without Regret
You only have this body to live in. There is no replacement and there is no second chance, not in this incarnation anyway.
Looking after our health as much as we can is paramount and makes the quality of life so much better. Do consider what you eat. Your gut health affects your whole body, so natural food makes a massive difference. Also we have to make new cells every day. We can only make new cells with the nutrients we have. We also need enough sleep time to regenerate our bodies and our minds.
Consider your diet, watch out for what doesn’t suit your body and learn to cook.
It will make a lot of difference. Just as exercise matters greatly. Our mental and physical health are inextricably linked. Without health our soul expression is limited.
We do not have complete control of course, but learning to look after the body and mind helps. The more able we are, the more we can experience and explore. The better our diet is, the more likely is that we will have the energy to be creative.
Keep moving. Walk every day. Do yoga, pilates and other practices which keep the body young. Find an exercise that you love, whether is full of play, or goals, or meditative.
Never take health for granted, it is a very worthy priority.
Choosing love and soulmates
Most of us have a romantic side deep down. It could be from the fairytales and Disney stories of youth. Or, it may feel deeper than that and like an echo from a past life.
Not all of us come to each life with the plan to find love, but I do believe we all have soulmates. Soulmate love can be a friendship, it can be a deep connection with a family member. It can be the amazing feeling of find that one truly compatible partner.
Whatever type of love you wish for, or are open to, it’s possible.
The more love we emanate, the more we attract. Learning to love will help you to vibrate on a higher frequency.
Choosing a partner for looks, money and status is gratifying for a short time. Having the gorgeous partner that others envy means nothing when you are alone together.
On the other hand, having a partner who loves you after seeing your darkest moments. A true equal who supports your dreams and share their vulnerable truths….that kind of love is magnificent.
True love takes courage. It takes you being able to share your fears and your dark side. The first time you share you shadow side, it may not turn out well. It’s worth learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. By exploring your depths you can learn self-love and forgiveness.
By accepting all of yourself, you will attract someone who can love all of you also.
It is when we fully accept ourselves that others will be able to truly love us. So embrace those fears, and weaknesses and learn to have an inner voice which is kind.
Review your inner voice and learn replace it with one of support and gentleness.
True love finds you when you truly love your own company and your own inner world, so be your own soulmate first. Do prioritise self love and do share your true self with those you trust the most.
