Animals are a big part of people’s lives whether they love them or not. This does not mean that they are necessarily dog or cat lovers. However, everyone has an animal that they feel the most connected to which would be their spirit animal. And spirit animals can change from time to time which may be why people have different preferences of animals that they would consider to be their favorites at different times.  

Astrology and numerology have connections to different animals. What about the tarot? Let’s look into which animal that each card of the Major Arcana of the tarot associate best with.

The Fool

This first card in the Major Arcana represents those who are brand new and ready to learn something that they have never known anything about. The animal that best fits with this card is the dog. Dogs are not just loyal companions, but they teach people new things all of the time. Devoted dog owners would agree with this as they would say that their pooch has taught them things that they would have never learned from anywhere else.

The Fool is also a card that represents innocence, and dogs are most definitely innocent beings.

The Magician

The Magician is the card that represents inventiveness and creation. The best-suited animal for this card is the fox. Foxes are shrewd and are known to be quite wise and creative. They have an inventive side and they are well aware of things that cannot be seen. They are always up to something just like The Magician.

The High Priestess

The bull is known for sticking to tradition and respecting its elders. In other words, the bull follows the rules.

The Lovers

The Lovers is the card that represents making choices and this can involve relationships or anything else that requires you to make a choice. The animal that fits with this card is the bee. Bees work with others, and they make choices as well, and they do it with integrity. This is exactly what this card represents. Making choices while being honest with yourself and with anyone else involved.

The Chariot

The Chariot represents movement and making the right type of movement that requires both strengths as well as a clear head. The fitting animal to this card is the Arabian horse. The Arabian horse is known for using its strength and smarts to keep going the right direction and not allowing anyone or anything to stop it from moving along.


Strength is the card that represents inner or outer strength, and it can represent staying strong even during ill health. It is not a surprise that the associated animal with this card is the lion given that Leo is the sign associated with strength. Lions are strong and powerful, as this card represents.

The Hermit

The Hermit is the card that represents introspection and finding the light within. That is why the suitable animal for this card is the firefly. The firefly is the sparkling light that anyone looks for. You go outside on a summer night and look for those fireflies that light up. You need the space to do that and to be free of distractions.

The Wheel of Fortune

The Hanged Man is the card that represents making a sacrifice in order to move on and it is depicted as someone hanging upside down. It is not a surprise that the animal that fits this card is the bat. The bat is the mater of suspension and it hangs upside down. Anytime you look at the bat, the image of this card in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck would immediately appear.


Death is one of the most misunderstood cards in the tarot but all it means is transformation, not literal death. Because of this, the animal that is best suited with this card is the butterfly. The caterpillar is the first phase of the butterfly’s life. And when it is time for the butterfly to bloom, the caterpillar is no longer a thing.


Temperance is the card that represents moderation and patience and going with the flow. The fitting animal for this card is the turtle. The turtle has the ability to take its home anywhere it goes which is going with the flow. Learning new skills and evolving slowly is what the turtle represents as well.

The Devil

This is the card that represents unhealthy obsessions and addictions. However, in a positive spread, it can be a sign of commitment. The Devil is associated with the vulture, as the vulture literally waits around for other beings to pass on so it can feed on it.

The Tower

The Tower is one of the other feared cards in the Major Arcana as it represents destruction that happens unexpectedly. However, it is for ripping something old away that no longer is serving to make room for the new. The animal associated with this card is the serpent, which is the animal that represents chaos, destruction, and the dark side.

The Star

The Star is the card is a welcomed card as it represents the light at the end of the tunnel or hope. And the fitting animal for this card is the porcupine. The porcupine is what represents trust and faith, and it shows up when there is a reason to be hopeful.

The Moon

The card that represents the shadow, deception, illusion, and mystery. The animal that is best suited to this card is the coyote because of how it is the trickster animal. The coyote knows how to be cunning and is a master at hiding things.

The Sun

This is the brightest card in the Major Arcana, and this is the card that comes up when things are going perfectly well. The animal that is associated with the Sun is the parrot due to the fact that it is a very bright-colored animal that brings out positive vibes.


This is the card that represents the awakening, entering a higher conscious level and your Higher Self. The raven is the animal associated with this card because it represents a change in consciousness, and it usually is for the higher good. It is a mysterious animal as well and there is a mysterious aspect of this card but in a positive and spiritual way.

The World

This is the card of completion and achievement and moving onto the next thing. The animal associated with this card is the beaver as this is an animal that represents building and a sense of achievement as well.
